Project description
The proposal is to permit a communication stair opening between 19th and 20th floors at this fully- sprinklered office building. Understanding that there is no fundamental difference between the proposed communication stair and the permitted escalator or moving walk, the alternative solution is only required because the floor assembly opening is 11.05m2, which is 1.05m2 larger than the permitted 10m2 opening. OBC 3.2.8.2(5) states:Except as permitted by Sentence (6), openings for escalators and inclined moving walks need not conform to therequirements in Articles 3.2.8.3. to 3.2.8.8. provided(a) the opening for each escalator or walk does not exceed 10 m2,(b) the building is sprinklered throughout,(c) closely spaced sprinklers and associated draft stops are installed around the openings in conformance with NFPA 13, ¿Standard for the Installation of Sprinkler Systems,¿ and (d) the interconnected floor space contains only Group A, Division 1, 2 or 3, Group D or Group E occupancies. To compensate for the larger floor assembly opening, the proposed alternative solution is to contain the area above the opening with a zero-rated fire separation, and locating a smoke detector, and two sprinklers inside this contained area. The proposed alternative solution meets the Objective and Functional Statements by limiting and reducing the potential for impact of fire beyond its point of origin, through the containment of heat and smoke on the 20th floor, which will also expedite activation of the fire alarm system.
